![]() “Wash face, shower, cook goulash, wash clothes, knead dough, replace sheets- pillowcases-blanket covers, iron, hang laundry, clean toilet, bake cake, pay bills, sour". The cabaret Be Beautiful is based on two 1950’s beauty guidebooks titled: “Be Beautiful” and “Your Beauty is in Your Own Hands”. It’s a collage of songs, dances and dramatic and comic scenes - all performed by three actresses and accompanied by a pianist. Throughout the show, the actresses try to find out (sometimes with the help of the audience) what being a woman actually entails. |

The guidebooks divide the “female experience” into many chapters and sub-chapters, such as:
Skin and its imperfections, wrinkles, eyes, nose, mouth, lips, voice, hair, neck, nape, shoulders, armpits, breasts, back, waist, belly, thighs, arms, fingernails, teeth, legs, feet, your privates, make-up, perfume, style, hygiene and cleanliness, stockings, shoes, hats, height, weight, proper posture, grace and personal charm, purse, jewelry, hairstyle, diet, the monthly miracle, pregnancy and childbirth. And the Cabaret does pretty much the same thing, in bringing all those rules, advice and “helpful tips” to life.
The cabaret is a result of a collaborative work in the new “Actor-Creator” programme in the Tel Aviv University Theatre Department’s MFA plan. In September 2005 we had our first presentation, which was received with great enthusiasm. This paved the way to our becoming an independent fringe-theatre production. Next we were accepted in the 2006 Israel Festival in the “Stage of the Festival “ platform, which introduces upcoming promising original talents in theatre. After our premiere in the Israel Festival, we were honored and thrilled to receive a ‘Creation Award’, a financial grant aimed to assist the production “out in the real world”. The panel of judges explained its decision: "Be Beautiful" succeeds to move and touch (the audience). The creators succeeded in finding original and versatile spatial solutions in which to present the various texts and songs. The creator [Goldberg] has used to the maximum each and every element of the stage and combined them in a very delicate and accurate way. We'd like to emphasize the good use of space, the wonderful music and the choreography.”
In the beginning of April 2006 we were invited to the Encounter International Theatre Festival in Brno, Czech Republic. We returned home, after having a wonderful time, with the award for “Best Original Text”. In July 2006 we received a scholarship from MATAN – Experimental Theatre Center – a Joint Project of: The Rabinowitz Fund for the Arts Tel Aviv, Reccanatti Fund, The Culture Board – Ministry of Science, Culture and Sports, Theatre Department – the Arts and Culture Council. In September 2006 we were invited to perform in the International Women’s Film Festival in Rehovot, Israel, as one of their special events. Since September 2006 we’ve been performing regularly in the Tzavta Theatre in Tel Aviv. On February 2007 we are scheduled to perform in the Reuteuleu International Theatre Festival in Lyon, France. This is the proper place to acknowledge and give thanks to all the people who’ve helped Be Beautiful all along the way: Dr. Nurit Yeari, Prof. Gad Keinar, Dr. Dorith Yerushalmi, Karin Tepper Bar Zeev, Shulamith and Haran Fainstein, Shachar Pinkas, Guy Godorov, Elad Terry-Nissan, Tamar Or, Victor Evron (‘Timber’ carpentry), Shiri Borchard, Shay Goldberg, Eyal landesman, Hadar Moran, Tal Eitan. |
